Ley Top Primary School Curriculum Intent

At Ley Top Primary School, we encourage our children to develop an enquiring mind and a love of learning. We aim to help our children realise their full potential and become confident, happy members of our school community. We provide an inclusivepositive environment in which we nurture and empower our pupils to develop life-long learning skills. This enables them to grow into reflectivesuccessful and well-rounded individuals in our community. As a whole school, we aim to provide a creative, exciting and inspiring creative curriculum.

We have used Cornerstones to develop a well-planned and sequenced curriculum which allows children to connect their knowledge across subjects and link learning to over-arching themes and concepts. We aim to bring learning to life and encourage curiosity through hands-on and memorable experiences. Our curriculum will ensure that pupils understand, accept and celebrate differences including beliefs, cultures, ethnicities and disabilities. Our broad and balanced curriculum will also increase knowledge and understanding of healthy living, the environment, cultural understanding, respect of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law and will  therefore, prepare our children for life in modern Britain.

Our curriculum is designed to promote collaboration and teamwork among students. We believe that working together with their peers allows students to learn from one another, share ideas, and develop strong interpersonal skills. Learning across the school is well-planned so that pupils build on previous learning, making meaningful connections that are explored in a variety of ways.

We also place a strong emphasis on the development of critical thinking skills. We want our students to be able to analyse information, ask insightful questions, and think critically about complex problems. By fostering critical thinking, we prepare students to approach problems with a well-rounded perspective.

Our curriculum offers numerous opportunities for hands-on and experiential learning. We believe that the best way for students to truly understand concepts is by actively engaging with them. Through experiments, school trips and other hands-on experiences, students are able to apply their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Subjects will be taught discreetly but, where applicable, they will be linked to over-arching themes and concepts. All children will be suitably challenged and will have opportunities to research, explore, discuss, debate and question learning content and wider themes. We will develop children’s understanding and use of ambitious and subject specific vocabulary.

All children will develop their knowledge and understanding of the world across the curriculum through reading high quality books and texts.

We understand that facing challenges is a natural part of the learning process. Therefore, our curriculum encourages resilience and perseverance. We aim to instil in our students the mind-set that setbacks are opportunities for growth and learning, and that with determination and perseverance, they can overcome any challenges they may face.

We believe that when students experience the challenge and enjoyment of learning, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated. This can involve creating stimulating and hands-on learning experiences that cater to individual interests and abilities. By allowing students to explore and discover knowledge, they become active participants in their own education.

Ultimately, our curriculum aims to create a positive and engaging learning environment. We strive to create a classroom atmosphere where students feel supported, valued, and encouraged to take risks.  By emphasizing these principles at Ley Top Primary School, we aim to cultivate a positive and meaningful learning environment where students can thrive academically, personally, and socially.
